Problem Solver > Roses > Rose Scale

Gardeners are often used to seeing insects hop, crawl or fly around. That’s why when a scale insect is present on their plants, they don’t recognise it as a pest. Rose scale is one type of a group of scale insects that have an armoured, dome-shaped covering. They attach the stems of roses that grow in damp, shady areas.

Appears as a white scale coating on older stems. Scale insects are often found on the undersides of leaves or on branches. Each species of scale has specific plants they are associated with. The scale blends in well, so the actual insect may not be apparent. Over time, the plant can become more chlorotic-looking, and any new plant growth can be stunted.
